Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) is the virus that causes Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS). AIDS is a life-threatening disease that infects and damages the immune system if our body. Statistics show that AIDS claims the life of 2 million people every year and infects about 8-10 million people.
There is no vaccine or cure for HIV/AIDS. Therefore, emphasize should be given on preventing it rather than treating it. Here are a few ways by which you can avoid HIV/AIDS.
Avoid unprotected sex
Always use a condom. It is the best defense against HIV. It not only protects you from HIV, but also from other sexually transmitted infections. If you decide to go through without using a condom, be sure that your partner has been tested. Avoid having sex with people who have multiple partners. Make sure that the condom is not broken and never ever try to reuse a condom.
Be careful of infected blood
Contact with the blood of people who are infected with HIV is the most common way through which HIV is transmitted. If you ever need to take blood, make sure that it is free from HIV virus. Also, avoid contact with open wounds since it spreads the virus.
Use disposable needles and syringes
Needles, syringes, razors and tattoo equipments can also spread the HIV infection. Make sure you never reuse disposable syringes or share razor at a saloon. If you decide to get a tattoo, select a clean tattoo shop. Also, wash any surgical equipment before you use them.
Abstain from anonymous Sex
People having multiple sex partners are at a greater risk of getting infected with HIV virus. You minimize the chances of contracting HIV by having sexual relation with only one partner. Avoid sex with someone you don’t know.
